Schools Services


Our Primary School's service ensures that every Cavan child has, through their school or classroom, access to the very best of Children’s Literature and to the joys of reading.

We welcome all schools and pre-schools to avail of the wide variety of services we offer. Our libraries are packed with award-winning materials designed to sow and cultivate the reading seed in our younger members.


What library services can my school avail of?

Each class group can borrow up to 40 books for a 4 week period.

Structured class visits can be organised on a regular basis.

Guided visits, incorporating tours of library resources for specific age groups, introductions to specific services; storytelling sessions and local studies tours. This will help teachers and pupils to get the most from their library.

  • We have choosen 30 titles to cater for varying reading abilitiies and a range of interests. 
  • A maximum of 20 copies of each titles is available.

Encouraging Reads

Designed to motivate even the very reluctant reader...

  • We have chosen 43 titles to encourage and motivate reading. 
  • A maximum of 20 copies of each title is available.

Note: The Classroom Novel and Encouraging Reads lending schemes are in addition to the regular lending of books to primary school classes, and we encourage use of all schemes to maximise the variety of reading material in the classroom. 

How can I avail of these services?

Every Primary School in the county has been allocated to a Branch Library.

  • Every teacher must register their own class.
  • Registration can be completed by calling to your local library for a “Group Membership Form” or you can Download it here.
  • The Membership Form must be signed and stamped by the Principal of the school for each class registered, before teachers can borrow stock.
  • Teachers must provide an e-signature at the library.
  • Teachers must agree to abide by our Rules and Regulations for Group Membership.

Teacher Support
Advice on reading material including literacy material, shared reading, learning support, award-winning readers, and class novels is available from your Contact Librarian. We will endeavour to provide block loans of stock, such as class novels and stock for project-work, subject to availability.  As much advance notice as possible is required. Library staff will do their utmost to support teachers requesting such services but, due to budget cuts, we may have to offer a limited number of requested titles and / or stock alternatives based on professional recommendations.

Join us for Library Events during the School year! 
Your local library runs an annual programme of events marking key Festivals such as Children’s Books Festival and Seachtain na Gaeilge. Some events are designed for class visits. This includes workshops, storytelling sessions and writer visits. We encourage you to Subscribe to our online Newsletter and check out Library Events online. This will ensure that your pupils don’t miss out on the fun activities happening in your local library.
