Cruinnui-na-nOgA day of free creativity for children and young people

Ireland is the first, and only, country in the world to have a national day of free creativity for children and young people under 18. Cruinniú na nÓg is a flagship initiative of the Creative Ireland Programme’s Creative Youth Plan to enable the creative potential of children and young people, took place on Saturday 15 June 2024.

Creative Cavan delivered events throughout Co Cavan and in a first for Cruinniú na nÓg, this year events also featured a cross border-collaboration between Cavan County Council and Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, who jointly manage the Cuilcagh Lakelands UNESCO Global Geopark, the world’s first cross-border Geopark.

Through Creative Ireland, Shared Island funding  ‘A Giant Adventure - Fairy Folklore'  delivered 2 fun days full of creativity celebrating the many myths and legends surrounding Cavan Burren Park  with tales of giant’s graves, druids’ alters, and ghostly water horses surround the otherworldly Cavan Burren Park.   This special event immersed children and young people in the mythology of this ethereal landscape, before taking them on a journey of creativity through different creative media.

Excellent feedback was received including:

“Wow what a wonderful exhibition - so inviting for inquisitive young minds and older ones too! Being able to interact with the different alphabets and symbols makes you want to learn more about their origins and meanings. The story well is a work of art in itself with its beautiful carvings and interactive stories. A wonderful example of how we should celebrate the languages spoken in our community.”

“Daniel (12) really enjoyed the workshop and learned so much from folklore, art, stories and engaging with other children. What is commented on was learning how to blend paints, really enjoyed been at the Cavan Burren and also how lots of time to create the painting and enjoy all the others stories of giants from other children as well.”
