Bealtaine Festival events at Johnston Central Library

We had two fantastic events celebrating Bealtaine Festival in Johnston Central Library. During our Oral Reminiscences event, pupils from St. Felim’s attended and thoroughly enjoyed it all. For our Hidden Talents event, children from Coronea N.S. attended. Everyone put on a great display, the library was full of music which brought smiles to many faces.

Evening with author Gerard Smith

A fabulous evening was had by all with local author, Gerard Smith, who was guest speaker at the Cross-Border Reading Project - 'A Bridge Across Difference' event in the Johnston Central Library on Tuesday evening 18th April. A large attendance from Cavan, Leitrim, Fermanagh and Tyrone libraries enjoyed the event.

International Womens Day in Cootehill

Cootehill Library hosted a superb morning with amazing women to celebrate International Womens Day. There was a lot of energy in the room and fantastic ideas suggested on how we can make Cootehill better for all women. Thank you so much to all from Le Cheile and Cootehill Town Team and to every woman who came along today. Special shout out to Happy Feet Walkers who came along too!

World Book Day Story written by Primary Schools

To celebrate World Book Day pupils in 2nd - 4th class took part in Cootehill Library's ROUND ROBIN. They were given a simple story starter and tale took off like a rocket from there! Each class added a new installment until the exciting conclusion. Well done to all the pupils and teachers who took part - your shared story is brilliant!

Decade of Centenaries Spring Lecture Series

Cavan Library Service is delighted to present four lectures as part of their Spring Lecture Series. With varied and interesting topics the guest speakers are Professor Linda Connolly, Dermot McMonagle, Professor Terence Dooley and Dr David McCullagh. The lectures are in different venues and booking is advised as places will be limited.

Get Cavan Reading for Ireland Reads

Ireland Reads is a campaign to get the whole country reading this month in the lead up to a national day of reading on Saturday, February 25th. Cavan Libraries has teamed up with libraries nationwide, publishers, booksellers, authors and others for the campaign, which aims to celebrate reading and all the benefits it can have for wellbeing and enjoyment.

Lego has landed at Cootehill Library

Have some family time with our Lego collection at Cootehill Library! Just ask at the desk and we'll let loose our boxes of fabulous Lego. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times - but grownups love to build too!

Local Voices for First Fortnight

Fantastic night had by all at Cootehill Library for 'Local Voices' celebrating First Fortnight. So many talented people in the audience shared poetry, stories, song and it was all stitched together with the brilliant accompaniment of musicians Tony McMahon and John Grogan!

Winners of our Christmas Colouring Competition

Thank you to all the children of Cavan for the hundreds of entries to our Christmas Colouring Competition. We loved all the colourful reindeer and could almost feel the heat from the festive fireplaces! The winners were Bailieborough - Eliots & Vala Johnston Central Library - siblings Dylan & Shannon and Eve Maria Cootehill - Kelly Marie & Ariana Well done everyone!

Feel Ukraine - Art Exhibition

Cootehill Library is currently host to an exhibition of artworks by adults and children from Ukraine who are now living in Cootehill. Working with artist Olivia Boyle as part of a project funded by Cavan County Local Development, the group used paint and mixed media to process the experience of displacement while adapting to the traditions and lifestyle of their host country and explored common symbolism, and natural and cultural aspects of both nationalities. All welcome to view the exhibition during library opening hours until 12 January.

Events Space back at Johnston Central Library

We are delighted to announce that Johnston Central Library has it's events space available again for events, meeting, community groups, exhibitions and more. During the difficult pandemic years it was used as a contact point for Customer Service, who have now returned to the second floor. Keep and eye out for upcoming events and celebrate with us!

Family Time at Your Library

Family Time at Your Library is the annual reading initiative held every December. Events and activities take place in all libraries during the month which aim to support a family-focused approach to reading and to promote reading as a fun, recreational activity for children. We’re celebrating on Saturday 3rd December with events at Johnston Central Library, Cootehill Library and Bailieborough Library – so come along and join the fun!

Healthy Ireland at Your Library - find an event near you!

Healthy Ireland at Your Library is part of the national strategy to improve health and wellbeing. We're actively promoting and supporting this initiative with our health and wellbeing events this November. There is something for everyone - chair exercises, sleep advice for parents of young children, minding your back and a seminar on living your life well. Check out our events section for details!

Great gathering for writer Edel Coffey!

Writer Edel Coffey visited Johnston Central Library on 21st September and drew a great crowd of fans and enthusiastic readers.  She was a wonderful guest and everyone very much enjoyed her visit to Johnston Central Library. By all accounts her second book is well underway! We're looking forward to it!
